A Statistical Physics Perspective on Web Growth
نویسندگان
چکیده
Approaches from statistical physics are applied to investigate the structure of network models whose growth rules mimic aspects of the evolution of the World Wide Web. We first determine the degree distribution of a growing network in which nodes are introduced one at a time and attach to an earlier node of degree k with rate Ak k. Very different behaviors arise for c < 1, c 1⁄4 1, and c > 1. We also analyze the degree distribution of a heterogeneous network, the joint age-degree distribution, the correlation between degrees of neighboring nodes, as well as global network properties. An extension to directed networks is then presented. By tuning model parameters to reasonable values, we obtain distinct power-law forms for the in-degree and out-degree distributions with exponents that are in good agreement with current data for the web. Finally, a general growth process with independent introduction of nodes and links is investigated. This leads to independently growing sub-networks that may coalesce with other sub-networks. General results for both the size distribution of sub-networks and the degree distribution are obtained. 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Background and Aim: A hospital website is an appropriate system for exchanging information and connecting patients, hospitals and medical staff. The purpose of this study was to identify and classify desirable web-based services in websites of Iran's hospitals based on Kano’s Customer Satisfaction Model. Materials and Methods: This was a survey study. The statistical population of the study co...
متن کاملFour Lectures on the Physics of Crystal Growth
Several aspects of the theory of epitaxial crystal growth from atomic or molecular beams are developed from the perspective of statistical physics. Lectures are devoted to the rate equation theory of two-dimensional nucleation and its limitations; the growth of multilayer wedding cakes in the presence of strong step edge barriers; the continuum theory of mound coarsening; and growth-induced ste...
متن کاملDynamic scaling form in wavelet-discriminated Edwards-Wilkinson growth equation.
We present an analysis of dynamic scaling of the Edwards-Wilkinson growth model from wavelets' perspective. Scaling function for the surface width is determined using wavelets' formalism, by computing the surface width for each wavelet scale, we show that an exact and simple form of the scaling function is obtained. These predictions are confirmed by computer simulation of a growth model descri...
متن کاملNoisy random Boolean formulae: a statistical physics perspective.
Properties of computing Boolean circuits composed of noisy logical gates are studied using the statistical physics methodology. A formula-growth model that gives rise to random Boolean functions is mapped onto a spin system, which facilitates the study of their typical behavior in the presence of noise. Bounds on their performance, derived in the information theory literature for specific gates...
متن کاملWikipedias: collaborative web-based encyclopedias as complex networks.
Wikipedia is a popular web-based encyclopedia edited freely and collaboratively by its users. In this paper we present an analysis of Wikipedias in several languages as complex networks. The hyperlinks pointing from one Wikipedia article to another are treated as directed links while the articles represent the nodes of the network. We show that many network characteristics are common to differe...
